Week 2

June 2, 2025- Simulation

On Monday, we had our first CHCI Programming. We had been assigned a role for the simulation, and I was named 12th term House Republican, which named me the Chair of the Judiciary Committee. Our topic for the simulation was the Ban on assault weapons. Which meant that I had to act like a passionate Congresswoman, making sure this bill doesn't get passed.

Before the simulation, I had watched a video of an actual hearing. I noticed that I had a bit of power as chair to allow who to speak, for how long, and what people can say. So when it was time, I took my gavel in my hand and stalled in an unnoticeable way. I took some time to introduce all members of the committee and all interest groups present. After that, I thought it would be right for all interest groups to take the oath before presenting. As the simulation got started, there were great speakers. I knew by the debates we were having that there were definitely people with the potential to be Congressmen. Overall, it was a great simulation and great to see everyone act and show their debate potential.

June 3, 2025- First Day In Office

Today was my first day in office. When I showed up, I was sweating and nervous because I didn't know what to expect, but I was greeted with a hug and a smile. The intern who has been there since the beginning of the year took me to get my badge. We spent like 2 hours in line since it was everyone's first day, but after she gave me a tour of the Capitol.

Throughout the week, I was given direction on what to do around the office on a daily basis. Press clips, phone calls, mail distribution, and memorizing the Capitol. It was a learning week. A week of questions and doubts. A week of failures but perseverance. Overall, it was fun. I had my desk with my computer, desktop, and phone. A perfect way to spend summer.

June 5, 2025- Dinner

After a long first week, I was contacted by my local CAMP Program PI. He wanted to meet the Oregon Students, and his friend from Michigan was there, so the Michigan Student was there. We had dinner, and coincidentally we all for the same plate: Steak.
