Programming and More
Monday 06.09.25 - Thursday 06.12.25
During our CHCI programming, we discussed the importance of identity and emotional intelligence. Throughout the day, we had the opportunity to express our viewpoints with one another and engage in deeper discussions. The most impactful conversations arose from opposing viewpoints, as they encouraged a level of maturity, boosted the expression of values, and created a sense of coalition among us. It was a mentally strengthening day of programming that brought all of the interns closer together.
This week in my placement, I had the exciting opportunity to connect with legislative staff in the office! I learned about the roles of legislative staff compared to those of interns. One key takeaway is that many staff members on Capitol Hill started just like me, a passionate and curious intern. Every director, legislative assistant, and even other interns are eager to guide and support you through your experience in a congressional office. Although I was in the office for only two days this week, my participation in various hearings, meetings, and briefings has deepened my understanding of the importance of our work during this crucial time in Washington, D.C. Given the current political environment, it is critical to ensure that the voices of the farm working and Latino communities are well represented.
On Wednesday, I had the opportunity to chaperone for the NextGen CHCI program. During this event, I met powerful young leaders who are beginning their post-graduation studies. I was thrilled to connect with the students and share my journey while watching them thrive as they spoke to representatives and Senate staff. My group bonded quickly, and I took them out for ice cream afterward. It was an amazing experience! Following the NextGen chaperoning, the HEP/CAMP interns received an invitation to attend the Congressional Baseball Game with NVG, where we watched representatives from each party compete against each other. It was so cool, and I felt grateful to experience it with my best friends.
Recharge and Restart
Friday 06.13.25 - Saturday 06.14.25
Unfortunately, this week has been challenging on the political front, with various situations disrupting the normal flow of Congress. As a result, safety concerns arose on Capitol Hill, forcing many offices to take the day off on Friday. I used this time to recharge and focus on my mental health. Especially during times like these, it’s essential to take care of yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally.
On Saturday, a few HEP/CAMP interns and I visited the African American History Museum, where we gained a deeper understanding of how the past influences our everyday lives. Earlier that week, a CHCI alum emphasized the importance of proudly acknowledging your hometown, no matter how small it may be, because there will always be someone who recognizes it. To my surprise, my hometown was highlighted in the museum as a historical landmark for school integration. It was amazing to see it represented! Later that night, CHCI interns hosted a Karaoke night for one of the intern's birthday. We all sang our hearts out and had a great time.
